LA QUERCIA PRIMAMADRE MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO COLLINE TERAMANE DOCG 2008

Winemaker Antonio Lamona employs low yield winemaking techniques by meticulously cutting back the vines.  The result is a well-balanced, expressive Montepulciano showing delicate notes of red cherry, fresh plums and red currant with hints of sage.  The story of the PrimaMadre is as follows:  “Oak, Old Mother, Primamadre. Since ancient times, the oak was considered a sacred and oracular tree. This story dates back to prehistoric times of the Roman civilization, Greek and Celtic. A favorite tree by the gods and men; they kept a chip of this wood to preserve them from misfortune. This ancient belief translates to modern history, when young recruits leaving for the war would pick up oak leaves in Abruzzo which had fallen in their path due to lightning strikes.  It was thought that, thanks to this talisman, the soldiers could not be hit by bullets because where the lightning fell once it will not fall again.”

Production Notes: The grapes are harvested manually and crushed within the following two hours. The destemmed and crushed grapes are placed in a glass cement fermentation container and cooled with thermal exchange plates, which prevent rapid changes in temperature. At the end of the active fermentation it is moved to stainless steel tanks where it continues a slow fermentation and after initial racking, rests for about six months after which it is racked again and put into Slavonian oak casks where slow maturity and a natural micro-oxygenation occur. The wine is then bottled and aged for at least six months.

About Montepulciano d’Abruzzo: The region is one of Italy’s most mountainous with more than 65% of all Abruzzo being considered mountainous terrain with the Apennines peaks reaching up to 9000 feet above sea level. The hillside vineyards planted on calcareous clay benefit from warm and significant sun exposure that is ventilated by dry breezes coming off the Adriatic.  Montepulciano d’Abruzzo can be highly aromatic with earthy notes and blackberries and have inky-purple color with a thick, viscous mouthfeel.

About Vini La Quercia: Established by four friends and colleagues in 2000, they came together to breathe new life into the small winery La Quercia, where they had met and consulted in years prior.

A small property encompassing only 12 hectares of vineyards and 3 hectares of olive tree groves, the farm also features 400 square meters of oenological plants, with a capacity to produce around 4000 hl of wine. Vini la Quercia focuses on the respect nature and environment in order to attain good and healthy products. They produce sustainably and organically.
