Since ancient times, the oak was considered a sacred and oracular tree. This story dates back to prehistoric times of the Roman civilization, Greek and Celtic. A favorite tree by the gods and men; they kept a chip of this wood to preserve them from misfortune. This ancient belief translates to modern history, when young recruits leaving for the war would pick up oak leaves in Abruzzo which had fallen in their path due to lightning strikes.  It was thought that, thanks to this talisman, the soldiers could not be hit by bullets because where the lightning fell once it will not fall again.”
